Each one of us is different and therefore each one of us has different requirements and limitations. We may suffer from similar disorders but the amount that one can spend on his treatment is never the same.

There has been a constant confusion regarding the differences in the efficiency, quantity and the price of generic drugs and branded drugs. First of all let me briefly define what actually generic drug is? To be very precise we may define generic drug as the twin brother of branded drug sharing the same quality, strength, safety, dosage etc….the only difference between the two lies in their price and looks.

Some people believe that the use of generic drugs as an alternative of branded drugs like Viagra may be dangerous, but that’s not true; since both these drugs use the same active ingredients, they share the same pros and cons. Generic drugs are prepared according to FDA requirement and therefore they have the same quality, strength, purity and stability as brand-name drugs.

Now the basic point of bewilderment occurs, if generic drugs are as effectual as branded drugs, why are they comparatively cheap?

The reason is very simple, because the manufacturers of Generic drugs don’t have the investment cost necessary for the development of a new drug. Branded drugs are developed under patent protection. The patent protects the investment—including research, development, marketing, and promotion—by giving the company the sole right to sell the drug while it is in effect. As patents near expiration, manufacturers can apply to the FDA to sell generic versions.

Since the generic manufacturers do not have the same development cost they sell their drugs at substantial discount. The second vital reason for the cheap price of generic drug is competition, once they are approved; there is greater competition, which keeps the price down. Today, almost half of all prescriptions are filled with generic drugs.

Do generic drugs meet the standards of the branded drugs according to the FDA?

Yes, both brand-name and generic drug manufacturers facilitate similar standards, in fact the FDA does not permits drugs to be manufactured in imperfect conditions. Around 3,500 inspections a year are conducted by the FDA to ensure the demanded standards. Generic firms have facilities comparable to those of brand-name firms. In fact 50% of the brand-name firms are linked generic drug production. They frequently make copies of their own or other brand-name drugs but sell them without the brand name.

Conclusion: generic drugs can not look like the brand name drugs because they are banned by the U.S trademark laws. However, they contain all the active ingredients of brand-name drugs and there is no reason to doubt their excellence.
