First of all why “low impact” training as opposed to any other kind. Well most people, when they consider an exercise regime, are thinking about cardio vascular exercise and the benefits that gives you in terms of a healthy heart and lungs and general well-being. That’s great and it will make you far fitter and healthier than you would be without it.

Hold on though. You’re probably quite young now and part of the reason you want to get into the habit of regular workouts is to stay fit as you get older. That’s where low impact training comes in. As people get older the first body parts to start giving trouble are usually the joints, particularly the lower limb joints.  Traditional exercise tends to give those joints quite a hammering. Joints have long memories and can be quite vindictive! They take their revenge in years to come!

Low impact training gives you all the benefits of other types without punishing the joints. Result? You stay fitter and more agile much longer.

So, how are you going to get this low impact training regularly in your own home? Well the most cost effective way is to invest in an elliptical cross trainer. That’s a type of stationary exercise machine which works by simulating the action of walking or running but without putting excessive pressure on your joints that can cause injury now or later. They are relatively compact so you won’t need to live in a mansion to accommodate one. Many of them are designed to stow away easily when not in use. With an elliptical cross trainer you get a cardiovascular workout that you can vary in intensity to suit your needs and your progress. Most models work both the upper and lower body at the same time. Elliptical cross trainers are driven mainly by the legs with some assistance from levers to provide work for the arms and shoulders.

You push and pull the levers which are set below shoulder height and shuffle your feet back and forth. The machine provides the resistance and the link between arm and leg motions. Using an elliptical cross trainer is primarily intended to raise your heart rate rather than to build muscle although of course your muscles cannot fail to benefit.

Most elliptical cross trainers are equipped with monitors which enable you to see the effect your efforts are having on your heart rate so you can see if you’re overdoing it long before it becomes harmful. So an elliptical cross trainer works in a similar way to a treadmill but your feet stay on the footboards instead of pounding up and down on them jarring your ankles, knees and hips. On some newer models the length of stride can be varied. The benefit of that is that as you alter the length of stride you bring into play a larger variety of muscle groups.

Now you’ve seen how an elliptical cross trainer can enable you to exercise your heart, lungs and limbs, in fact your whole body without storing up joint problems for the future. That’s great but what if you’re not a young person. The future’s already here for you! You’ve already got the joint problems but you need to exercise for the sake of your heart and general health. The cross trainer is ideal for you too. Starting with gentle settings you can exercise without thumping your joints as you go. The movement without impact should actually help jour joints as well as your cardiovascular system.

So there you have it. An elliptical cross trainer is the ideal machine for both the young and the not so young.
